There is no single best fiber for leggings. Fiber content sets a range of possibilities; yarn shape, filament size, knit structure, fabric weight, dye, finishes, and heat-setting determine the result. Two pairs labeled 80% nylon and 20% elastane can feel and perform very differently.

Nylon: soft does not mean delicate

Nylon—also called polyamide on some labels—is popular in premium leggings because it can create a smooth hand, strong abrasion performance, and deep color. It is not automatically more opaque or more breathable than polyester. A very fine, lightly knitted nylon can be less covering than a dense polyester interlock.

Polyester: more than the budget option

Polyester takes disperse dyes and sublimation printing well, absorbs little water, and can be engineered into fast-drying fabrics. Surface texture ranges from slick to peach-soft. Odor behavior depends on garment design, soil release, antimicrobial treatment, washing, and the user—not simply the word polyester.

Elastane provides stretch—not quality by percentage

Spandex and elastane are regional names for the same fiber class; LYCRA is a trademark. A higher percentage does not automatically mean better stretch or compression. Yarn gauge, how elastane is integrated into the knit, and heat-setting affect extension and recovery. The useful question is whether the finished fabric returns to shape after repeated movement.

Fiber content is an ingredient list, not a performance test.

What about cotton, bamboo, and modal?

Cotton, modal, and regenerated-cellulose blends can feel soft for restorative yoga or daily wear. They absorb more moisture than polyester and usually dry more slowly. “Bamboo” apparel is commonly rayon or viscose made from bamboo-derived cellulose; the plant source does not make the finished fiber naturally performance-ready or impact-free.
