How to Prevent Chafing When Working Out: Thighs, Sports Bras, and More

Chafing is friction plus moisture plus time. Fix any one of the three and the problem gets much smaller — here's how, area by area.

Key Takeaways

  • Chafing comes from friction, moisture, and repetition; reduce any one to prevent it.
  • Compression or bike shorts with a 5–7 inch inseam are the best fix for inner thigh chafing.
  • Sports bra chafing usually means the band is too loose, the wrong size, or worn out.
  • Avoid cotton, choose flat seams, and use anti-chafe balm on hot spots.
  • Treat chafed skin gently, keep it protected, and see a doctor if it looks infected.

Chafing is one of those problems runners and gym-goers talk about endlessly — and often only discover in the shower, when the water hits. It happens when skin rubs against skin or fabric repeatedly, made worse by sweat and the salt it leaves behind. The good news is that it is very preventable.

Fast answer

Snug fabric + flat seams + anti-chafe balm

Loose or wet fabric that moves against skin causes most chafing. Close-fitting, moisture-wicking layers and a balm on hot spots prevent nearly all of it.

Inner thigh chafing

  • Wear compression or bike shorts with a 5–7 inch inseam — long enough to cover where thighs meet, snug enough not to ride up.
  • Prefer full-length leggings or half tights to loose shorts if you chafe easily.
  • Look for silicone grippers at the hem so the leg opening stays put.
  • Apply an anti-chafe balm to the inner thighs before runs over 30–45 minutes, and carry a small stick for long efforts.
  • Prefer loose shorts? Wear a compression liner underneath.

Sports bra chafing

The most common spots are the centre-front band, under the breasts, and along the straps or back clasp. A band that is too loose moves with every stride and rubs; one that is the wrong size can dig in. Check the fit using how a sports bra should fit, and if you wear a larger cup size, our sports bras for large busts guide covers encapsulation styles that sit flatter. Balm along the band line helps on long runs, and a worn-out bra with stretched elastic is a common hidden cause.

Fabrics and fit that help

  1. Skip cotton. It soaks up sweat, gets heavy, and stays wet against your skin.
  2. Choose flatlock or bonded seams instead of raised seams.
  3. Fit matters more than brand: loose fabric flaps and rubs, while overly tight bands dig in.
  4. Replace gear once the elastic loses its snap — stretched fabric slides, and sliding fabric chafes.
  5. In hot, humid weather, reapply balm on longer sessions.

If you've already chafed

Rinse gently with lukewarm water and mild soap, pat dry, and apply a simple barrier ointment such as petroleum jelly. Let the area breathe and avoid the clothing that caused it until it heals. See a doctor if the skin shows signs of infection — increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus — or does not improve within a few days.

Frequently Asked

How do I stop my thighs from chafing when I run?

Wear snug compression or bike shorts with a 5–7 inch inseam, or leggings, and apply an anti-chafe balm to the inner thighs before longer runs.

Why does my sports bra chafe?

Most often the band is too loose and moves as you run, the size is wrong, or the elastic has worn out. A well-fitted band, smooth seams, and balm along the band line help.

Is Vaseline good for chafing?

Petroleum jelly reduces friction and works as a barrier, but it can wash off with sweat. Dedicated anti-chafe balms tend to last longer during exercise.

How long does chafing take to heal?

Mild chafing usually heals within a few days if you keep it clean and protected. Seek medical advice if it worsens or shows signs of infection.
